If you own your own online business you have to consider search engine optimisation (SEO). Sometimes the size of your site may determine the amount of SEO marketing you implement, which means if you are trying to create a larger site there are certain things you might need to be doing that you currently are not.
The number one area to concern yourself with when creating a larger site is the URL’s you will be generating for the site. As you may already know, each page you create must have a URL to link it to the other pages on the site and for external links. When enlarging a site you need to make certain that the other pages you create will make sense. You also need to have the URL’s work. Too often with SEO people forget to maintain their links. You need to be able to control the number of URL’s as well as how they link to ensure the consumer can find what they need. There is more to this URL issue though.
The website content needs to have only one URL attached to it. In other words you don’t want a page on pet care where you’re talking about health issues in cats to have two URL’s; this is unnecessary and makes it harder for the consumer to locate new information when they see the same content. It also creates a problem with duplicate content. If you have two URL’s with the same content, Google and other search engines will pick one or none of the pages to index. This can greatly affect the page rank. It can also make it difficult for consumers to find you and your website.
It is recommended that SEO controllers need to take away references to the indexes and defaults from the web address. In other words the person in charge should make sure there is no trailing or / on the end of the web address. By removing these issues it will be easier for search engines to move through the sites, thus it is easier for consumers to find you. SEO is just part of the goal. When it is not completed correctly it can do more harm than good.
Another thing to make sure you don’t do in SEO with the URL’s is use the CamelCase. One should also remove port numbers from the URL’s to make it easier. When creating a larger website there are two steps to the search engine optimisation that are important. These steps are programmatic optimisation and manual content optimisation. These two things must be looked at separately to ensure they are both being created properly.
Large websites can certainly help a business grow, but with the wrong type of SEO you and your business could end up without the proper indexing. There are more things to SEO than listed here, but URL’s are definitely a large part of maintaining a site and helping the spiders get through a site for consumers to find you.
