Small Business SEO Suggestions

Do you have a small internet business?  You still need search engine optimisation to get yourself in the results; in fact you need more SEO strategy than a corporation.  Google and other search engines tend to put the big businesses on the top when a search is done by a consumer.  They tend to have better strategy, more money for advertising, and the time to spend on building a site.  We have a few tips that can help you out distance or at least come up par with the larger business sites.

A small business needs to write for the consumer.  Yes you do need the spiders to crawl your site, but the way to do this is through original, unique content, in which you pay attention to the reader.  It will be more natural and therefore more favourable to the consumer.  Keyword usage is very important in this step.

Each page needs a meta description and a title.  The title needs to vary from page to page as does the description.  If you don’t have a different topic for another page put it on one.  You don’t however want to combine two short ideas on one page. The keywords should be used again in this area.

Something else you have to consider is how you publish the content.  For example you might be looking at a site that has issues with apostrophes.  Instead of giving a contraction like “don’t” the page comes up “dona4$t.”  A lot of websites are affected by this problem.  It can be hard to even realise this has happened.  Some web browsers have the problem while others do not.  You can bet that the search engine crawling your site will mark you off in the content for such issues if it occurs.  The best thing to do is not use those words but instead write it out.  You can also find tools on the internet to clean up your document before it is published.  Word particularly has a nasty problem with junk coming through that should not be attached to the document.

Blogging is also a small business saviour.  When you design a blog you get to add an article each day or every few days.  This means you are refreshing the content on your site which tends to attract the spiders to the new pages.  These pages often get the consumer to your site where your homepage is lower in rankings.  Blogging is very simple.

Another great idea is press releases.  If you have a friend in the media or can establish a media relation you can get them to do a press release on new products, services, or other information about your company.  Not only do you get the advertising, but they generally put these on their site.  This means you have a link from a reputable company helping establish your company.

Social media is another area to be interested in.  You don’t want to spam the network, but find friends who don’t mind helping you out.
