Six Mistakes that Could Hinder Your Website

Search engine optimisation or SEO is needed with every website, but there are some things that we might forget to check on to make sure they work.  Here are some common mistakes that might detract from your site and therefore from your SEO strategy.

Search engines work by sending out “spiders” to crawl through a website.  These spiders will take a look at how the website is built for a number of variables to determine where the site should be placed in the index and whether it should be given in the top search results.  When making a website the most common mistake is navigation barriers.  These barriers may be in the format of the site, the links, or if images are used.  To make the site easy to navigate menus and site maps are added, but this does not completely eliminate barriers.  To consider the problem gone you have to make sure your links are working.  You also need to make sure that the format such as HTML is used over Java.

This also goes for the code.  If your code is difficult to understand by the spider then you may look invalid.  Make sure everything is validated and working.  Do not let something like robots.txt get in the way of a web crawler.

You should also target for more than just the wins.  Sure the top 20 search results are important, but do not let something else slip out of your grasp.  Sometimes the keywords just below the top twenty are just as important to your search engine optimisation.

Meta information is imperative.  Your homepage should not be called “Homepage.”  Instead each page needs to have a title and description that tells the consumer and search engine what is on that page. By offering more information the person will get better results.  You also need to structure the meta information appropriately.  Make sure the tags are not more than 128 characters.  Your descriptions should be less than 30 words as well.

Analytical positions are important when it comes to keywords.  In other words look at the number of hits a word gets.  Check whether those words would make sense to your website and the content you need to create.  Do not just choose a word that has high numbers if it will not make sense.  You also need to remember that plural keywords are just as important as singular.  Just because one keyword may appear in your Google Adwords results as singular does not mean you can’t make it fit the grammar.

Lastly for search engine optimisation to be helpful you need to have something the consumer wants.  You can have all the SEO in the world, but if you don’t provide relevant information about where you are, what you sell, and offer enough sales options, you will not succeed.  SEO can only take you as far as getting the search engine to post you in results on a search.  It is up to the site to sell to the consumer.
